Overview
The Federal Fair Housing Act makes it illegal to consider race, color, religion, national origin, sex, disability, or family status in rental, sales, or lending decisions. The Minnesota Human Rights Law also makes it illegal to discriminate based on creed, marital status, public assistance, or sexual orientation in rental, sales, or lending decisions.

A Good, Safe Place to Live
You have the right to live anywhere you want to, as long as you can afford the rent and honor the lease terms. You both have rights and responsibilities wherever you choose to live, and so does your landlord. If both tenant and landlord follow the rules and do the right thing, a rented house or apartment becomes a safe and friendly place for you and your family to live. To learn more about fair housing in this program, “A Good, Safe Place to Live”, available in Somali, Karen, Spanish, Hmong, and basic English. To ask for a DVD, call or email ECHO at 651-229-1304 or email info@echominnesota.org.
Because there are time limits on when an allegation can be filed with HUD after an alleged violation, you should report housing discrimination as soon as possible. When reporting housing discrimination, please provide as much information as possible
