Tax abatement is a temporary deferral of taxes by the city, county, or a combination of both. The tax abatement proceeds can be used to pay for public improvements that benefit the property, acquire and convey land, reimburse cost of improvements made to the property, and other development costs.

There is a process that needs to be completed for a subsidy request, which begins with completion of a subsidy application. Abatement requests are evaluated on a case by case basis and are contingent on City Council and County Board approval.
