Do I qualify for free tax preparation?

You may qualify for free tax preparation at various locations across Minnesota. You can generally get help at a Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site if any of the following are true:

  • You are age 60 or older
  • You are a person with a disability
  • You speak limited or no English
  • Your annual income is less than $54,000

In addition, the AARP Tax-Aide program offers free tax preparation for all taxpayers, particularly those who are age 50 or older. AARP Tax-Aide sites do not have income or age restrictions.

Both programs will only prepare basic returns

Search for free tax preparation sites

Important - before you search:

  • Take note of the program type (VITA or AARP Tax-Aide) as this may limit which sites you are eligible to use.
  • Information on free tax preparation sites is provided by volunteer organizations. Although this information was current when posted, hours and dates of sites sometimes change during the filing season. Please review the opening and closing dates for each site listed in your search results.
  • All sites provide services in English. To find a site that provides assistance in another language, please choose from the Language drop down menu below.
  • Taxpayers with disabilities are encouraged to call the tax preparation site directly for the most up to date information on site accessibility and/or to request an accommodation.
  • If you cannot locate a site near you, call 651-296-3781 or 1-800-652-9094 (toll-free) for assistance.
